2012 America’s Swimming Pool Company has seen tremendous growth as a Franchise company, now serving over 200 cities in 12 states. In 2012 ASP launched over one dozen new franchise locations across the country. The “Best New Franchise Start” is an award that recognizes the top sales from a first year franchise location, highlighting the new owner’s hard-work and dedication to success.
James King, owner and operator of America’s Swimming Pool Company - Springfield, VA. was this year’s recipient. With his military background, Mr. King brought forth a very strong work ethic and drive to be successful with his new venture. The support from his wife, son and daughter also played a very critical role in his early success. Mr. King was able to have his initial success in a very seasonal swimming pool market in Springfield, VA., which also demonstrates his dedication to his customers and their needs. Mr. King embraced the principal that ASP was founded on, by providing exceptional customer service no matter the circumstances. “We are very excited with how well ASP of Springfield performed this year and look forward to watching it grow in 2013 and beyond,” stated Mr. Stewart Vernon, Founder and CEO of America’s Swimming Pool Company.

ASP Welcomes Matthew Blackmon!

Matthew Blackmon is originally from Long Beach, Mississippi and attended Mississippi State University where he graduated with a degree in construction management. After graduation, Matthew went to Orlando, Florida.  Here he worked with Beazer Homes, a residential construction company and then worked with ValleyCrest, a landscape construction company where he was a project manager. When the Gulf Coast was impacted by hurricane Katrina, Matthew decided to return to Mississippi to assist a local contractor to help rebuild the surrounding communities that were in much need of assistance. Matthew along with his family are active in their community and are looking forward to providing a “one –of- a- kind” business service for residential as well as the commercial industry in their hometown and surrounding areas.

How did you learn about the brand?
I was searching for a business to run on my own. Initially, I was looking for a landscape franchise, but I came across ASP during my research and decided to forego an opportunity with a landscape franchise because ASP offered a better business model.

Why did you choose an opportunity with America’s Swimming Pool Company?
The most appealing thing about ASP is the coaching and support provided throughout the whole system. If you have any sort of problem, someone in the system has an answer or solution for you. It’s fantastic, the system and service is unmatched in the industry.

What makes your business different?
We’re a much more professional organization and our flat rate pricing for repair and maintenance work is somewhat unheard of in the service industry. Additionally, we treat every person we do a job for the way we’d like to be treated – with respect and integrity. Working in the construction industry for so long I’ve seen the importance of a professional environment and giving the customer a great experience.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
Taking the risk to jump into the deep end and become a first-time entrepreneur is a challenge. At the same time, it’s also very exciting. I’m looking forward to being able to help the community and provide the satisfaction of good service.

What are your expansion or development plans?
I’m looking to be the go-to company for the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast!

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?
In the last years or so I’ve really enjoyed boating, wakeboarding, wake-surfing and just being out on the water. But my greatest passion is spending time with my five month-old daughter and fiancĂ©.

ASP Welcomes Bram Schad!

Bram Schad is a lifetime resident of Ocala, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in construction management. For over 20 years he worked with his father in a commercial roofing business called RaeCo of Ocala Inc. Bram worked throughout the Southeastern U.S., with clients ranging from Disney World and Sea World to NASA and the National Guard. Recently, Bram purchased an existing pool company and converted it to ASP – America’s Swimming Pool Company of North Central Florida.

How did you learn about the brand?
I had been researching the pool business and attempted to purchase a couple Pinch-a-Penny stores. During my due diligence process, I found a number of swimming pool service concepts, ASP being among those. As I did further research, I felt that ASP was a good fit for me – the culture of the company was something I really liked and the proximity of my territory to the corporate office in Georgia were key factors in my decision.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
The systems that a franchise has in place and how they prepare you for success are really appealing business aspects to me. The group buying power and the support with being part of a franchise is fantastic.

What makes your business different?
We are bringing an exceptional business to an industry that is fragmented in this community.

What are your expansion or development plans?
We are already in a position to hire additional field staff, and are looking to double the current amount of contracts within a year. We would like to service in excess of 300 accounts by the end of 2014, as we have one of the largest territories currently in the system.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?
My primary passion is my family. I love spending time with my wife and three daughters. I also love to fish and cook; I actually own four different types of grills!

America’s Swimming Pool Company Reaches 100 Unit Mark

America’sSwimming Pool Company (ASP), the nation’s first pool franchise, is proud to announce it has reached the 100 unit mark, capping off a year of unprecedented growth and expansion across the country.

“2012 has proven to be one of our most successful years since we have been in business, and crossing the 100 unit mark is an important milestone for us,” said Stewart Vernon, founder and CEO of ASP. “None of this would have been possible without the help of our amazing franchisees who make the company what it is today.”

Since the Macon-based company began franchising in 2005, it has experienced drastic growth in a small amount of time, now with 110 territories in more than 200 cities in 12 states. In 2012 alone, ASP signed and opened 27 new franchise territories in five new states, all while enjoying a 62 percent increase in year-to-date sales. With an easy-to-follow system and business plan that has been proven by new and existing pool companies, ASP has quickly grown to become the go-to pool service company in every territory it serves.

“We have been able to expand and attract new franchisees because we are constantly working to improve internal systems,” continued Vernon. “Additionally, we are working with our national vendors to secure the best pricing scale for our franchisees, which in turn gives our customers the best pricing. All of this adds up to more and more people recognizing the ASP name and using our services and the growth of our business.”

ASP was founded to bring a higher level of professionalism, service and reliability to the highly-fragmented pool service industry. After establishing a location that exceeded a million dollars in sales, Vernon believed he had a concept that could be not only replicated, but also highly successful in any location. In 2011, annual revenues were up 55 percent from 2010 to $13.5 million. By the end of 2012, the brand is expected to top $15 million in system-wide sales.

Despite the extraordinary growth, ASP continues to support its franchisees with some of the best support in the industry. The company continues to add new members to its corporate team in order to provide 24-hour support across the system, help its franchisees develop sales goals, improve marketing and making sure all customer issues are handled quickly and professionally.

“No matter how large or successful ASP becomes, we will always be dedicated to supporting our franchisees and providing the best services in the industry,” said Vernon. “We look forward to continued growth and expansion, and can’t wait to celebrate our continued success with everyone in the ASP system.”

ASP Women Owner/Operators Featured in Pool and Spa News

ASP has 3 articles featured in the Pool and Spa News online about ASP women owner and operators  Below are links to the 3 articles.

Woman’s Work - These service technicians’ can-do attitude takes them far
By: Linda G. Green

Here we are in the 21st century, yet it still surprises many people to see a female-owned pool service company. It shouldn’t.

Women own more than 8.3 million companies in the United States, generating nearly $1.3 trillion in revenue and employing 7.7 million people, according to the “2012 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report,” commissioned by American Express.

“Sometimes I feel I must double-prove myself,” says Nancy Dozier, co-owner/operator, ASP of Lake Oconee, Ga. Local homeowners have been known to react to the female pool service tech with “Are you kidding me?” So Dozier is determined to win over the skeptics.

It’s been a challenge, to be sure. The former nurse had to learn not only an entirely new set of job skills, but also overturn the reputation of the previous owner of her franchise. “That’s been one of the most difficult challenges,” she says.

Woman’s Work | Hands-On Approach - These service technicians’ can-do attitude takes them far
By: Linda G. Green

Tina Brown says she was “just a mom who had some issues with management of my community pool. The water wasn’t balanced and equipment wasn’t handled properly. It led to frustration.” But rather than complain, she decided to do something about it. The Greenville, S.C., native obtained a CPO license and went on to take over management of that pool.

Swimming Pool “Must haves”

By: Josefine Koehn

Imagine yourself walking out to your backyard after a long day in the office. Sparkling blue water is awaiting you, the waterfall is lit up and you just have to slip out of your robe to step into a warm bubbling hot tub. Here are some more ideas to ensure, that you can truly enjoy your swimming pool project.

Comfort
Especially up north, a good heat pump is essential to ensure the enjoyment of your swimming pool. Heat pumps do not actually produce heat, but pump the existing heat from it’s surroundings in to the water. The result is an efficiency rate of 100 percent.

Hot Tubs and Spas are always a great addition to your pool. They are great for relaxation and you will find yourself using them year round - not just on colder days.

Safety
According to the Freakonomics-authors Levitt and Dubner “an unprotected pool is more dangerous to your child than a loaded gun.” And honestly, how much fun can a swimming pool be, if you constantly have to be on the watch out. The new mesh fences are much less of an eyesore and will keep your little ones safe.

Jamie Snyder of The Albert Landscaping Group also recommends the installation of a safety pool cover. The new covers are very strong and durable. Up to 12 adults are able to stand on one. “Even I was surprised how much weight the new covers can carry,” says Snyder. Pool covers also help to reduce evaporation and to keep the water temperature up.

The Pros and Cons of Owning a Swimming Pool Home

Fresh Design and Architecture posted an online article about the pros and cons of owning a swimming pool. For the full article and to see more photos, click here

The Pros and Cons of Owning a Swimming Pool Home

Doesn’t everyone love homes that have swimming pools? The relaxation and the fun activities that the kid’s can enjoy in the summer time is the appeal. While others would argue that the upkeep and safety risks should be taken into account by home owner’s before they purchase a swimming pool home. Swimming pools are a luxury for some, and a necessity for others. If you’re considering buying a swimming pool home, or plan to have one built, look at the pros and cons of being a swimming pool owner.

RECREATION: Whether you live in warm or cool climate, swimming pools usually can be enjoyed by home owners at least 3 months out of the calendar year. For those that have indoor pools, the weather has no bearing on their use. PROS: Swimming pools are a great way to get exercise for adults and children. The added benefit of no impact exercising on the body is a plus over impact filled activities. Kids and adults alike, enjoy playing and relaxing around a pool. Summer time pool parties or a late night swim is always enjoyable when you own your own pool. CONS: Swimming pools can be dangerous around children and those who don’t know how to swim. If you choose to own a swimming pool you should have the proper safety fencing, and door locks installed on your home. The homeowner can be held responsible for injuries caused in their pool by neighbors, or friends.

Mesa Man Lands 1st AZ Branch of Ga. Pool Firm

America's Swimming Pool Co.'s has a story featured in The Arizona Republic about a Mesa native, Clint Rowley, who has a reputation for turning businesses around. Now, the 34-year-old entrepreneur is turning his sights to the pool industry, becoming America's Swimming Pool Co.'s first Arizona franchisee at 950 E. Brown Road.

By: Maria Polletta

From building up his own pest-control company and upping membership at a women's gym to dramatically increasing billings at a paramedical company, Mesa native Clint Rowley has a reputation for turning businesses around.

Now, the 34-year-old entrepreneur is turning his sights to the pool industry, becoming America's Swimming Pool Co.'s first Arizona franchisee at 950 E. Brown Road.

Rowley said he decided to contact the national pool-maintenance, renovation and repair company after encountering hundreds of neglected pools as the owner of Real Property Management, which oversees about 1,400 properties in the Valley.

"We were getting calls from tenants saying, 'Our pool is green, our pool guy doesn't show up,' " he said. "It's a very fragmented market. There are lots of pool vendors or companies that are small and can clean a pool, but they don't really know what they're really doing in terms of the management or business side. We were throwing them more work than they could handle."

Georgia-based America's Swimming Pool Co. hadn't originally planned on expanding to Arizona, despite dramatic growth in more than 175 U.S. cities since its founding in 2001, according to CEO Stewart Vernon.

"It was a little west of where we wanted to expand," he said. "But Clint was beyond qualified, and we knew he'd be wildly successful being from Mesa, being a business owner and having those contacts. His premise was that he was already dealing with swimming-pool contractors on a regular basis and felt he could provide a higher level of service."

The number of Arizona pools hurting for year-round maintenance further convinced Vernon.

Rick McKnight Dives into Swim Business Venture

Rick McKnight, ASP franchisee owner for the Longview, TX territory, has been featured in news-journal.com. Read the full article by clicking here.

McKnight dives into swim business venture
By: By Mike Elswick melswick@news-journal.com

Rick McKnight was looking for a career change and said going into business for himself was something he wanted to investigate.

He worked in the environmental programs area for the East Texas Council of Governments for years and was ready to see what opportunities might be available. Mc-Knight started doing research on his own into possible ventures when he enrolled in the eight week small business startup course offered by the Kilgore College Small Business Development Center this spring.

McKnight did not waste any time putting what he learned in the course to use in his own business. On July 1 he became the owner of a Longview-based franchise of America’s Swimming Pool Co.

“This is a good fit and a good opportunity for me,” he said.

Of the business startup course, McKnight said he would seriously recommend it to anyone contemplating going into business for themselves.

“I took a lot from it,” he said. “I was in the middle of the class when I found the franchise.”

Tips for Closing your Pool During the Off Seasons

Design Pool & Spa online offers proper steps on how to close down your pool for the off seasons. As fall approaches, it's best to take proper precautions to make sure this is done correctly. Click here to read the full article.

Pool Closing Tips: Protect your Pool During the Off Seasons

As the fall months approach and pool season winds down, it’s time for pool owners to start preparing to close their pools. Proper closing measures are essential in maintaining a healthy pool for future summer seasons to come. Design Pool & Spa offers the following tips to get your pool ready for winter:

1. Balance the water chemistry one last time within a week of the pool closing to ensure all levels are within the ideal ranges.

2. Treat any algae prior to close. Be sure to allot for the time it will take to treat the algae before closing. This is not usually something that can be done a day or two before closing.

3. Choose your closing chemical program (consult your in store professional for recommendations). Keep in mind some closing chemicals require a certain amount of time to be in the water before the pool can be closed.

4. Vacuum, skim and brush the pool as close to the actual closing time as possible. Debris left in the pool over the winter can cause staining and algae in the spring.

5. The filter(s) inside of cartridge filter systems should be removed, cleaned and stored in a dry place away from rodents. There is a chemical that the filters should be soaked in to ensure they are thoroughly cleaned.

‘Things to keep in mind regarding your pool closing’

1. In-ground pool plumbing and equipment need to be “blown out” to prevent against pipes bursting and the damage of underground plumbing over the winter time. This should be done with the use of a heavy duty compressor NOT a shop vac. Due to the severe repercussions of incorrectly performing this step, it is highly recommended to have a professional close your pool or at least execute this step.

2. Depending on previous issues during the season, the water level may or may not need to be brought down for the closing. For example, if you have a vinyl liner pool and the liner has ever floated, you will most likely not need to drain down any water. Consult your professional for your particular pool’s needs.

State of the Industry!

ASP featured in an online article, State of the Industry By Leaps and Bounds, in Pool and Spa News! The article calls out three large pool and spa companies that have managed to grow despite the bad economy.

State of the Industry By Leaps and Bounds
By: Rebecca Robledo

The past few years have been tough for the pool industry, but three notable companies have managed to expand not only in spite of the Great Recession but, in some cases, partly because of it.

Northern California-based builder Premier Pools began a licensing program to spread its brand around the country. Georgia service firm America’s Swimming Pool Co. (ASP) debuted a franchise operation. And national retail chain Leslie’s Poolmart accelerated its growth significantly.

These companies have managed to thrive in a terrible economy, and they did it using business models that usually don’t succeed in the pool and spa industry. Though it’s true that other firms have recently grown, few have done so on a national or even multi-regional level.

Here, the company principals and industry observers discuss the reasons behind Premier, ASP and Leslie’s success.

America’s Swimming Pool Company Signs Systems First Area Developer in Arizona

Multifaceted entrepreneur, Clint Rowley, opens nation’s only pool and spa franchise in Arizona bringing new level of customer service.

America’s Swimming Pool Company Signs Systems First Area Developer in Arizona
By: Jordy Patano

MESA, ARIZ. - Despite being a relatively young company, America’s Swimming Pool Company (ASP) is experiencing unprecedented growth, breaking nearly every record to date including signing its first Area Developer, Clint Rowley. The new opening in Arizona marks the furthest West the brand has expanded up until this point and the first location in the state, signaling healthy expansion as ASP opened in four new states in 2012.

Although America’s Swimming Pool Company is new to the area, Rowley is by no means an inexperienced entrepreneur. Rowley has owned and operated various businesses including Real Property Management, which manages more than 1,400 units and was the initial reason behind opening the franchise. Over the course of five years being in the maintenance industry, Rowley encountered ongoing issues in finding an experienced and dependable pool company that could encompass anything from fixing a leak to renovating a pool.

“One of the biggest challenges I had in my industry was finding a quality pool company who had both the experience and the reputation for dependable work,” shared Rowley. “There are a lot of pool companies in the area that are themed a secondary business and I am excited to make ASP my first priority for providing a level of service that is somewhat unknown throughout the East Valley while taking the opportunity to educate our customers about their own pools.”

Being the entrepreneur that he is, Rowley jumped at the opportunity and worked quickly to open his ASP location in time for summer 2012 to bring these needed services back to Mesa. ASP brings a wealth of experience and training to its team as well as more affordable prices for the customers focusing on everything from weekly maintenance, repairs, renovations and everything in-between.

“We are very excited to have Clint join the ASP team and are proud to have him be the first Area Developer in our company bringing the franchise to Arizona,” said Stewart Vernon, CEO and Founder of America’s Swimming Pool Company. “This new territory in Mesa opens a whole new market for us as we continue to develop franchises across the United States and we couldn’t have found a better person to join the team.”

ASP is the nation’s first pool and spa renovation and maintenance company has signed and opened 16 new franchise territories in three new states in 2012 and has seen a 62 percent increase in year-to-date sales. Since the Macon-based company began franchising in 2005, they have grown drastically and now have 99 territories in more than 175 cities in eleven states across the United States. By providing an easy-to-follow system that has been proven by new and existing pool companies, America’s Swimming Pool Company has excelled in nearly every environment.

About America’s Swimming Pool Company

America’s Swimming Pool Company, the Nation’s most respected swimming pool maintenance and repair franchise, was established in 2001 by Stewart Vernon of Macon, Georgia. The company was built on the belief that providing the highest-quality pool maintenance with competitive pricing and a high level of dependability will attract customers. Since 2005, ASP has expanded into 99 territories in the Southeast, servicing over 175 cities and eleven states across the country. At this point, the company manages over 60 million gallons of water per week and renovates or remodels more than 250 pools each year. For information, please visit www.ASPpoolco.com.

How did you learn about the brand?

I was looking for a career change and I decided to explore a number of possibilities. The thought of owning my own business was appealing to me so I began researching different franchising opportunities. I found ASP online and from my research I knew that this type of service would do well in my area.

What makes your business unique?

The swimming pool maintenance industry is fractured, but with ASP we are bringing a service to the area that is of the highest quality, professional and dependable. We will do whatever it takes to make sure that our customers are happy and well taken care of.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
Our greatest challenge right now is just building up a presence in the area and just getting the ASP name out there. Being a new company to the market, I know that it will take a little bit of time which is why we have spent so much time marketing and speaking with local residents.

What are your expansion or development plans?

Right now we are focused on building awareness within the community to start building the business toward its full potential. I’m excited to be able to bring such a quality service to the area and know that residents will also appreciate the new level of customer service and support that the ASP name comes with.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

ASP Featured in Athens Banner-Herald

ASP is featured in an article in the Athens Banner-Herald. The article discusses the merger between Sweetwater Pools and America’s Swimming Pool Company to join two of the largest pool maintenance and repair companies in the market. America’s Swimming Pool Company has its retail storefront in Athens at 1720 Epps Bridge Road in Suite 106.

Pool Company Merger Opens Up Larger Market
By Athens Banner-Herald Staff

Sweetwater Pools, a 10-year-old pool company serving Watkinsville and Athens, has merged with America’s Swimming Pool Company. The larger company now has a permanent store located at 1720 Epps Bridge Rd. in Suite 106.

Sweetwater Pools was created by Chad Sutton 10 years ago when he saw a void in the Athens area market for quality pool companies. Sweetwater Pools was the only pool company in the area until America’s Swimming Pool Company in Athens a few years ago. Sutton started making arrangements to merge the two companies when he realized his competitors offered full service renovations and has a national brand.

Looking to open up a larger market, Sutton began work to merge the two companies. Sweetwater Pools and America’s Swimming Pool Company finalized the merger earlier this year.

America’s Swimming Pool Company Experiences Explosive Start in 2012

Despite being a relatively young company, America’s Swimming Pool Company is experiencing unprecedented growth, breaking nearly every record to date. The nation’s first pool and spa renovation and maintenance company has signed and opened 16 new franchise territories in three new states in 2012 and has seen a 62 percent increase in year-to-date sales. Its explosive start is a testament to the unmatched professionalism and unique systems that America’s Swimming Pool Company has designed for franchisees throughout the system, which was contributed to its zero-percent failure rate.

“So far 2012 has produced tremendous growth as a system and for nearly every franchisee,” said Stewart Vernon, CEO and Founder. “All of our new franchisees have had the best start to date and we have seen an increase in demand for services for every franchisee in the system, which means we are doing something right.”

ASP was founded to bring a higher level of professionalism, service and reliability to a highly fragmented industry. After establishing a location that exceeded a million dollars in sales, Vernon believed he had a concept that could be not only replicated but highly successful in any location. And the numbers don’t lie. In 2011, annual revenues were up 55 percent from 2010 to $10.5 million and in 2012 the brand is expected to top $15 million in system-wide sales.

“We have continued to improve our systems to make sure we allow every franchisee to be as successful as possible, which means we are constantly working with national vendors to secure the best pricing scale for not only our franchisees but also for each of our customers,” shared Vernon.

As a company, ASP takes pride in helping new and existing entrepreneurs open their own business, entry into the system is doable, with no prior experience needed and an initial investment level between $43,550- $64,300. Over the past year and a half, ASP has also worked with a number of conversions of existing pool companies to help accelerate growth by providing a nationalized brand, marketing guidance and 24-hour support. ASP has also hired new members to the corporate team to provide a better level of support for every franchisee, whether it be in evaluating sales goals, improving marketing or making sure all pool problems are handled as quickly as possible for customers.

“With the incredible growth that we have seen, we realize it is more important than ever to continue growing our staff to answer all questions from our customers and our franchisees,” shared Vernon. “We have built a reputation on our level of professionalism, outstanding customer satisfaction and service and we are determined to uphold that reputation as we grow.”

Finding Your First Veteran Franchisee

As a young franchise system, finding your first veteran franchisee can often be a challenge, but one that companies are willing to work for. Whether it be overcoming barriers of sharing franchise information with military veterans about future opportunities or delivering messages about the growing company, it can be hard to connect with the right individual at the right time.

In 2012, America’s Swimming Pool Company welcomed their first military veteran to the system, Col. James King, Ret. King served as a Marine Officer for nearly 30 years, working across the globe for humanitarian missions, global crisis and served in multiple wars including Desert Storm and the conflict in Iraq. King mostly flew KC-130 aerial refueling tankers as he worked his way up through the ranks.

Upon retiring, he spent some time working for a defense contractor as a senior strategic policy and program analyst for the Department of Defense Non-Lethal Weapons Program. In 1997, King decided to take a step back from his military life and began looking for a new career to pursue closer to home; one where he could stay active, work with people and fill an underserved market with a professional company.

After looking into various business opportunities, King was introduced to America’s Swimming Pool Company through the help of a franchise broker. Based off the tremendous growth over the past few years and the growing success of the brand, King knew it would be a good fit.

Franchisee Profile: Melissa Crow

Name: Melissa Crow
Opening Date: 3/1/2012
Territory: Mobile, AL. (Mobile and Baldwin County)
Phone Number: 251-605-8705
Email: mobile@asppoolco.com

Melissa Crow is a Mobile, Alabama native who went into the dental hygiene field directly after high school. Beginning her dental career as a dental assistant, Melissa soon decided to continue her studies and became a dental hygienist. After seeing the success of her brother, Wayne Gable who owns ASP of Charleston, Melissa became curious about the business opportunity in Mobile. Now, she is the new owner-operator of America’s Swimming Pool Company, servicing Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama.

How did you learn about the brand?
I learned about ASP from my brother, Wayne Gabel, who is an ASP franchisee in Charleston, South Carolina. He took over the business there after it had been in service for five years and was very successful. I had always wanted to be a business owner and ASP seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. Wayne is also currently one of my business partners along with my husband.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system? The most appealing aspect of joining a franchise system with ASP is the support and camaraderie between franchisees. ASP is a tightknit community and everyone genuinely has everyone else’s best interest in mind.
What makes your business different? One of the main differences between us and the competition is the professionalism of ASP. If people are going to have strangers in their backyards, they should have the right to feel safe and comfortable.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now? I’ve gone from servicing teeth to servicing pools and one of the greatest challenges was learning a new trade. There are a lot of things I had to learn about swimming pool maintenance so that I would be able to have a successful business. I put in the time and effort so that I can work towards perfecting my craft to better serve the community.

Do you see any parallels between your previous work and now? The main similarity between ASP and my former career in dental hygiene is dealing with people and customer satisfaction. It’s important to treat people with respect, be punctual, upfront and courteous.

What are your expansion or development plans? Right now I’m currently focused on building our two territories and we have plans to add a retail store in the next few years.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions? I love to get outside and be active! I mostly play tennis quite a bit but I also golf and do some cycling.

Franchisee Profile: Kevin Harnage

Name: Kevin Harnage
Opening Date:
Brand: America’s Swimming Pool Company
Location: Valdosta, GA
Phone Number: 229-300-1811
Email: Valdosta@asppoolco.com

Kevin Harnage is a 22-year-old entrepreneur who learned about ASP from his uncle, Chad Sutton, who converted his existing swimming pool company, Sweetwater Pools in Athens, GA to an America’s Swimming Pool Company in early 2012. Prior to becoming the operator of the ASP in Valdosta, Kevin attended college at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia and has a background in agriculture and farming. He is excited to bring a new, professional company to the Valdosta community and knew it would be a good fit because of his passion for working outside.

What was your career before franchising?
In 2009, I went to ABAC, which is an agricultural college in Tifton, Georgia and had also worked on a few cotton and peanut farms in South Georgia. This past December, my uncle, Chad Sutton, approached me about this opportunity to start ASP in Valdosta. I I have always been a hands-on type of person and ASP gave me the opportunity to go in to business and to still be outside, which I loved.

How did you learn about the brand?
I learned about the brand from my uncle who was in the process of converting his existing pool company to an America’s Swimming Pool Company in Athens, Georgia. He was looking to expand even further outside of Athens, and we didn’t have any pool companies like ASP in the Valdosta market, so we knew there was a demand for professional pool servicing.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
What I enjoyed most about joining a franchise system was the education during ASP’s Pool School on the industry and the continued support by the corporate team. I never imagined myself in the pool business and ASP taught me everything there was to know, from servicing pools and repairing parts, to running the books and keeping track of the day-to-day operations.

What makes your business different?
At the ASP in Valdosta, we want our customers to be 100% happy with our work and we want to be able to guarantee satisfaction. We want to create a strong reputation in the community and make sure that we are doing the best job, every time at every pool. With the professionalism from our uniforms, to the process that ASP has developed for the customer, we want to establish ourselves as the premiere pool company in the area.

What are your expansion or development plans?
During the first year, we want to try to spread the word to the community as much as possible that we have opened and have a very experienced brand supporting us. I have done a lot of door-to-door marketing and want to raise awareness for all pool owners who may be doing maintenance themselves or are unhappy with the service they currently are receiving. We want to build a solid base of customers for weekly and monthly maintenance and would be really happy to build a strong, positive reputation.

Sean recently became the manager for America’s Swimming Pool Company of Pensacola under the ownership of Ryan Eiland.

How did you learn about the brand?
I was familiar with ASP previously, but learned more information about the brand and the available position through my parents, whom are great friends with ASP owner Ryan Eiland’s in-laws.

What is appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
The thing I find most beneficial about the franchise system from a managerial perspective, is the support and training that ASP offers. They really take great care of their franchisees and this has allowed us to be successful.

What makes your business different?
The greatest difference between ASP and the competition is the high level of service and professionalism. All of our employees are experts in the industry and receive the best training. They carry themselves with a professionalism that is unmatched in the industry.

Also, our location is open seven days a week so that we can better serve our customers. Both Ryan and I both come from a sales backgrounds and know how crucial it is to take care of our customers.

Do you have any hobbies or passions outside of business?
I am an avid scuba diver! I also enjoy cycling, sailing, and almost all watersports.

America’s Swimming Pool Co.
URL: http://asppoolco.com/
What It Will Cost: $49,200 - $89,500

Why We Like It: When founder Stewart Vernon created the concept, he did so to fill a niche and a much needed service gap. Pool owners in Macon, GA, needed someone to service their pools. Vernon was just the guy. Fresh out of college, Vernon built a monster of a local business. And, then, naturally decided to franchise it. In 2012, Vernon added 21 more locations. With ASP, prospective franchisees have an opportunity that eats and breathes fun. And with flexibility of work schedule and hours, it allows for flexibility of life.

America's Swimming Pool Company featured on aquamagazine.com

America's Swimming Pool Company was recently featured on aquamagazine.com in a piece titled State Of The Industry Survey: Service Sector — The Star of the Recession ". The article discusses the state of the pool industry, with service leaders in the industry giving their personal assessments about the overall health and outlook moving into the future. Founder and President of ASP Stewart Vernon discussed how the consumer is feeling more confident about the economy than the past 2-3 years as seen in recent spending on backyard activities. . Click here to read the entire article.

photo of a man cleaning an outdoor poolWhen the curtain came down on the U.S. economy in 2007, the vast majority of builders and retailers took quite a beating, as financing became difficult and homeowners hunkered down in survival mode.

However, many of these homeowners already owned pools and tubs, and it made sense to continue to maintain them. So service departments at pool retail stores were generally able to avoid personnel cuts, and sole proprietors cautiously reported stable earnings. Some were even able to raise prices a little, despite the mass layoffs and dreadful economic news of the early recession.

As the recession wore on, money and relative success being an attractive force, other pool and spa professionals (and even newly unemployed people from outside the industry, some unable to tell a pool from a pole) began jumping into the service business, leading to a dramatic increase in competition that continues to this day.

As we open the swimming season in 2012, the overall health of the service industry is good, and there is reason to hope it will get even better.

The economy remains a mixed bag. Many areas of the country are still suffering recession-like effects, but that has been a constant refrain for at least four years. Mingling with it now are strong statements by servicers seeing signs of real growth for the first time.

“The economy has picked up,” said one service pro. Another attributed his better profitability to an “improving local economy and aging of equipment in service area.”

Perhaps the most enthusiastic assessment came from Stewart Vernon, founder and president of ASP, Macon, Ga., a swimming pool service franchise company with 93 locations ranging from Dallas to D.C.

Franchisee Profile: Todd Turnbow

Name: Todd Turnbow
Opening Date: May, 1, 2012
Territory: Jackson, Tenn.
Phone Number: 731-217-2329
Email: jacksontn@asppoolco.com

Todd Turnbow is a Jackson, Tennessee native with a degree in marketing from Union University. Todd spent 10 years in manufacturing management with Fruit of The Loom and Jockey Sportswear. After working in management, Todd went on to work in sales and marketing for 10 years. The last two to three years Todd had worked in building material sales for Acme Brick Company before deciding to go into business for himself. Todd is now the owner/operator of the America’s Swimming Pool Company servicing the Jackson area.

How did you learn about the brand? I got the idea after I had my own pool installed in my backyard about 3 years ago. It was a challenge to learn how to take care of my investment in regards to water chemistry and equipment. We would take a water sample to the local pool storefront and get tested and this would lead to having to buy hundreds of dollars in chemicals and spend the balance of the day mixing and applying the chemicals hoping to get the water balanced. At that point I did see a need for a pool company that would market itself in a professional manner to pool owners in regards to maintenance, service, and renovation and bring this high level of service to the customers own backyard. During my research I found ASP and was immediately impressed.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system? The training was one of the biggest factors in deciding to go into franchising with ASP. They have a great system and they set you up for success through their support, both technical and on the business side.

What makes your business different? My business plan is to offer “FLAT RATE” pricing on maintenance programs, service repairs, new equipment and renovation to pool area. This offers the customer a total price for the service and gives them a piece of mind and comfort level of what they will be paying.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now? Learning a new business has been the most challenging part of the entrepreneurial experience. I am glad to have the training and support of ASP’s corporate team to help me succeed.

Do you see any parallels between your previous work and now? The parallels between my previous work and my business would be very simple; you have to offer a high level of customer service along with great products and competitive pricing to be successful. Also, working in the building materials industry for several years I have developed a network of contractors and contacts that will help with the renovation segment of the business.

What are your expansion or development plans? Right now I am focused on building my business and getting more involved with the community, but I would love to eventually expand and open more territories in Western Tennessee.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions? I love the outdoors and I have a passion for landscaping, golf and fishing.

In The Swim: America's Swimming Pool Company
By: Kim Jackson

A sparkling crystal clear pool gives one an itch to dive in and enjoy a quick swim to cool off during the long, hot days of summer. Or maybe the idea of weekend and holiday friend and family gatherings by the pool is your idea of fun. For many homeowners, having a pool service open the pool for summer is a number one priority. Once the pool is serviced and ready for swimmers, the most important thing for pool owners to remember is to properly maintain their pool to extend its life and the pleasure your family gains from it. A pool is a significant investment and quality care will insure many hours of summer fun.

According to Nancy Dozier, co-owner with her husband Doug of an America's Swimming Pool Company franchise, enjoying a fun-filled summer around the pool is as simple as letting ASP handle all aspects of maintaining your pool, thereby allowing you to enjoy the outdoor living space for which Lake Oconee is famous.

Franchisee Profile: James King

Name: James King
Opening Date: 3/5/2012
Location: Fairfax County, VA
Phone Number: 703-594-1775
Email: springfield@asppoolco.com

Colonel James King served as Marine Officer in the United States military and had been in the military since the early 1980’s. King had a variety of jobs over his nearly 30 years of service and was able to travel all over the world for humanitarian missions, global crisis and served during multiple wars. He had always been interested in business ownership and had been looking for the right opportunity since 1997. After he retired, he wanted to find a small business that he could open in the service industry in Fairfax, Virginia to be closer to his family.

What was your career before franchising? Before franchising, I was a Marine Officer for nearly 30 years. Most of my career consisted of flying a KC-130 aerial refueling tanker and I worked my way up through the Marine’s. I retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Military and then spent some time working for a defense contractor as a senior strategic policy and program analyst in support of the Department of Defense Non-Lethal Weapons Program.

How did you learn about the brand? I had been looking at different business opportunities since about 1997, including dozens of different franchises and other ideas. One of my professors also happens to be a franchise broker and discussed the success of America’s Swimming Pool Company and suggested that I open one in the Fairfax area. What I liked about this specific model was that the company was a mature business but the market wasn’t saturated, especially in our area. There also were tangible results of the work that America’s Swimming Pool Company did and I enjoyed the idea of working outside. Also, the franchise fees were reasonable and I could get the business up and running relatively quickly.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system? Why I liked the franchise system is because most of the bugs had already been worked out instead of having to start my business from scratch. Being a franchisee, it ensures you that you are not completely alone, that they are also vested in your business’s success. Some of the bugs are already worked out as you start up a business. They help with the training, marketing and continued education and are equiped to help franchisees with any problems that come our way.

With regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel helped you in your business? My leadership experience in the Marine Corps makes me comfortable talking to people and finding solutions. I believe it has also imbued me with a good work ethic and professional integrity that customers will appreciate.

Why did you choose to enter this industry? The pool business is reasonably recession resistant. Pool owners still have to keep their pools maintained, pool equipment repaired, and chemicals balanced. People who own pools can usually afford to have their pools maintained, repaired, and renovated, which is why I ultimately decided to go in to this business.

How did you finance your business? I used personal funds, and a “Qualified Plan Rollover Business Startup” process through Guidant Financial.

Are there any prominent industry trends that you are experiencing right now?
Not really any yet as I am just starting, but I expect the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirement that commercial pools are required to have chair lifts will have an impact in the next year.

What are some of your achievements (professionally or personally) that you think will help you along the way in your business?
My experience as a squadron commander in the Marine Corps should help with my being able to keep things in perspective. Also, my combat experience will also help people maintain their composure when things are not going well.
