Here we are in the 21st century, yet it still surprises many people to see a female-owned pool service company. It shouldn’t.

Women own more than 8.3 million companies in the United States, generating nearly $1.3 trillion in revenue and employing 7.7 million people, according to the “2012 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report,” commissioned by American Express.

“Sometimes I feel I must double-prove myself,” says Nancy Dozier, co-owner/operator, ASP of Lake Oconee, Ga. Local homeowners have been known to react to the female pool service tech with “Are you kidding me?” So Dozier is determined to win over the skeptics.

It’s been a challenge, to be sure. The former nurse had to learn not only an entirely new set of job skills, but also overturn the reputation of the previous owner of her franchise. “That’s been one of the most difficult challenges,” she says.

Tina Brown says she was “just a mom who had some issues with management of my community pool. The water wasn’t balanced and equipment wasn’t handled properly. It led to frustration.” But rather than complain, she decided to do something about it. The Greenville, S.C., native obtained a CPO license and went on to take over management of that pool.

Swimming Pool “Must haves”

By: Josefine Koehn

Imagine yourself walking out to your backyard after a long day in the office. Sparkling blue water is awaiting you, the waterfall is lit up and you just have to slip out of your robe to step into a warm bubbling hot tub. Here are some more ideas to ensure, that you can truly enjoy your swimming pool project.

Comfort
Especially up north, a good heat pump is essential to ensure the enjoyment of your swimming pool. Heat pumps do not actually produce heat, but pump the existing heat from it’s surroundings in to the water. The result is an efficiency rate of 100 percent.

Hot Tubs and Spas are always a great addition to your pool. They are great for relaxation and you will find yourself using them year round - not just on colder days.

Safety
According to the Freakonomics-authors Levitt and Dubner “an unprotected pool is more dangerous to your child than a loaded gun.” And honestly, how much fun can a swimming pool be, if you constantly have to be on the watch out. The new mesh fences are much less of an eyesore and will keep your little ones safe.

Jamie Snyder of The Albert Landscaping Group also recommends the installation of a safety pool cover. The new covers are very strong and durable. Up to 12 adults are able to stand on one. “Even I was surprised how much weight the new covers can carry,” says Snyder. Pool covers also help to reduce evaporation and to keep the water temperature up.

The Pros and Cons of Owning a Swimming Pool Home

Doesn’t everyone love homes that have swimming pools? The relaxation and the fun activities that the kid’s can enjoy in the summer time is the appeal. While others would argue that the upkeep and safety risks should be taken into account by home owner’s before they purchase a swimming pool home. Swimming pools are a luxury for some, and a necessity for others. If you’re considering buying a swimming pool home, or plan to have one built, look at the pros and cons of being a swimming pool owner.

RECREATION: Whether you live in warm or cool climate, swimming pools usually can be enjoyed by home owners at least 3 months out of the calendar year. For those that have indoor pools, the weather has no bearing on their use. PROS: Swimming pools are a great way to get exercise for adults and children. The added benefit of no impact exercising on the body is a plus over impact filled activities. Kids and adults alike, enjoy playing and relaxing around a pool. Summer time pool parties or a late night swim is always enjoyable when you own your own pool. CONS: Swimming pools can be dangerous around children and those who don’t know how to swim. If you choose to own a swimming pool you should have the proper safety fencing, and door locks installed on your home. The homeowner can be held responsible for injuries caused in their pool by neighbors, or friends.
