ASP – America’s Swimming Pool Company expands into the state of Louisiana

A new location of ASP – America’s Swimming Pool Company has recently opened in Shreveport, Louisiana, owned and operated by John Bodden. ASP of Shreveport serves residential and commercial swimming pool owners in Caddo and Bossier Parishes, providing swimming pool maintenance programs, pool equipment diagnostics, equipment repairs, pool chemicals, supplies, and pool renovations including vinyl liner replacement.

“Being a pool owner myself, I knew what services were available in Shreveport,” stated Bodden. “I wanted to be the one-stop-shop for the do-it-yourselfers as well as provide my backyard expertise for service work, maintenance, repairs and renovations.”

Before opening ASP of Shreveport, Bodden owned a Sport Clips franchise.  Most recently, Bodden managed a heavy truck dealership as well as it’s leasing and maintenance division for 9 years before deciding to enter into the swimming pool business. In his experience of owning a franchise, Bodden knows bringing an ASP franchise to the Shreveport/Bossier City area allows him to provide top-notch, professional swimming pool services to his customers.

Bodden lived in Baton Rouge for 22 years and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1992, with a degree in Advertising and Marketing. While in college, he started his own pool company to earn money for tuition.  After graduating, Bodden served eight years in the Louisiana Army National Guard as a Specialist in the Engineer Corps (Spc.-E4) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Bodden and his family have lived in Shreveport for almost 10 years.  Bodden enjoys spending time with his wife and children, coaching youth football, and expanding his collection of autographed football helmets. When asked which helmet was his favorite, Bodden undeniably favors his LSU Tiger Riddell helmet autographed by Coach Les Miles, Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn of the 2007 BCS Championship season.

THE SWIMMINGPOOL.COM POOL TOY HALL OF FAME

While things are turning colder we wanted to share this blog post for you to remember the fun you had this summer with the kids and the pool toys.  Do you have any of these Pool Toy Hall of Fame toys?

Pool Toy Hall of FameI highly doubt that swimming pool toys were used in the “Great Bath” of Mohenjo-daro. However, swimming pool toys have been entrenched in the overall swimming pool history. Pool games are much more fun with pool toys. Imagine a world where all you could do in a pool was swim laps. Even though, swimming laps in a pool is a great form of exercise and means to stay in shape. Luckily, you don’t have to live in that reality. For this reason, we would like to introduce you to the inaugural class into the “Pool Toy Hall of Fame”.

Pool NoodlePool Noodle

One of the most versatile pool toys on the plant, the pool noodle can be used to in the swimming pool to help with flotation. This is especially important for people who are learning how to swim. Pool noodle can also be used as aquatic exercise equipment. The pool noodle can aid in balance or be used as a resistance factor in the pool water. The pool noodle has be a favorite of children swimmers for ages. The noodle can be used in games such as Noodle Joust. Today, the pool noodle is be used outside of the pool as well. The pool noodle can be used to help with your golf swing or even inside your boots to keep them standing up. These are a few reasons why the versatile pool noodle is the first inductee into the Pool Toy Hall of Fame.

Beach Ball in PoolBeach Ball

The beach ball gained popularity at its namesake, the beach, but it has definitely made an impact in another form of water and society. The beach ball was invented in 1938 by Jonathon DeLonge. Beach balls have been seen at sporting events as well as props in skits and costumes. A large amount of pool games involve a beach ball for fun. Games such as bummer balls are based on the inclusion of the beach ball.  The world’s largest beach ball was showcased in Poland and is almost 52 feet in diameter! That beach ball won’t fit in most swimming pools, but the beach ball has earned its spot in the Pool Toys Hall of Fame.

Swim FloatiesSwim Floaties

Swim floaties have probably contributed more to swimming that any other swimming pool toy. Up to 65% of the United States population doesn’t know how to swim. Imagine what that percentage would be without the invention of swim floaties. The swim floaties gained popularity in the early 1900’s to ease parent’s worries when swimming became a part of school curriculums. The material and design of swim floaties have changed over time but still serve the same purpose and promote swimming. For their contribution to swimming as a whole, swim floaties are a welcomed addition to the Pool Toy Hall of Fame.

Rubber DucksRubber Ducks

This inductee is a bit of a wild card in the Hall of Fame class. The rubber duck was invented in the late 19th century probably with a swimming pool a distant thought. However, the rubber duck can be seen in many aspects of swimming pool fun and games. Games like the Duck Push have made the rubber duck the focal point of the fun. Rubber ducks have been in include into the shape of the swim floaties and rings for children.  The world record for the largest rubber duck collection stands at 1,439 different ducks. That is A LOT of rubber ducks.  Since 2007, the world’s largest rubber duck, weights over 1,300 pounds, has been traveling world. According to Florentijn Hofman, the creator world’s largest rubber duck, it was produced to “Spread joy around the world.” For this very reason the rubber duck is the embodiment of a toy worthy of the Pool Toy Hall of Fame.
Every inductee to the 2013 class of the Swimming Pool Toy Hall of Fame has contributed a special piece to the history and joy of swimming. From the invention of swim floaties to promote swimming, to the joy brought by beach balls, every member of this class deserves the title: Pool Toy Hall of Famer.

Closing Your Pool For The Winter?

Consider the Consequences.

Visual Effects: Your Pool Is the Centerpiece of Your Backyard! Allow it to Shine!

Cost Benefit : By keeping your pool open this winter, you will not incur a pool closing or pool opening expense.  Additionally, the pool water chemistry will be properly maintained, keeping it algae free this spring and not requiring the cost associated with a pool recovery.   Finally, your pool equipment will be better off.  Closing your pool runs the risk of having costly repairs to the pool equipment due to the equipment being shut down over several months.

Protect Your Investment: Studies show that when pools turn green it deteriorates the walls and bottom of your pool.  Studies also show that a closed pool can cut the life of your plaster in half or damage your vinyl liner, due to improper water chemistry.

Safety: Floating pool covers are considered dangerous.  They are typically opaque and make it very difficult to see what is beneath them.  They often appear as if they can be walked on but will collapse under the smallest amounts of weight, even when being held down by sand bags or other weights placed around the deck.

State of the Industry!

ASP was featured in Aqua Magazine's service portion of their State of the Industry Issue:

Service Voice 2013: Stewart Vernon
For the service portion of our State of the Industry issue, we spoke we three of the industry’s leading
service professionals to serve as our “service voices.” In these profiles, they share how their businesses
fared last year, their strategies for success and their vision for the future. For 2013, we spoke with
Bob Nichols, Pete Coccaro, Jr. and Stewart Vernon.

Stewart Vernon
Founder and CEO
America’s Swimming Pool Company
Macon, Ga.
ASP is the country’s largest swimming pool maintenance and
repair franchiser. Currently, the company has 110 franchise
locations in 12 states.

How’s business these days at ASP?
Well, when you asked me that question last year, we were having our largest classes of incoming pool
school attendees. We launched 14 locations last year, which was a record for us.
If you break them down, the highest-performing locations did better last year than any of the highperforming
locations from the previous year. Last year’s class of new locations got off to a better start and
generated a higher amount of first-year revenue than we’d ever seen in the past.
Some of that was improvement in the response rate to marketing. We’re seeing customers really start to
buy in and believe in the variable speed pumps — the energy efficiency and energy savings that new
technology in the pool business is able to bring. We’ve really capitalized on this. We’ve seen a record
number of variable speed pumps sold last year. And this year, we’ve almost sold more in February of this
year than we did in all of last spring.
The new technology is well-branded in the pool business and we’re seeing the results of that. The
consumers are responding.

Are you wondering when is the best time to open your swimming pool?

by: Jimmie Meece, Jr

Mesh Safety Cover - ASP of Greenville
Answer: It all depends?? In other words, you need to ask yourself a couple of questions to determine that answer. First, when did you close (cover/winterize) your swimming pool? Second, when you closed your swimming pool was it clear or dirty/green? The answers to these two questions will help you determine when to open your pool for the season.

Typically, those with swimming pools that reside further north will cover and winterize their swimming pool to help protect it from freezing conditions; however, if the swimming pool is not closed properly in the fall it could lead to a costly pool opening in the spring. For example, when you close your swimming pool too early in the fall, before the temperatures cool down, you could have a late season algae bloom, and consequently a green pool when you open in the spring. Also, if you allow the pool to turn green in the fall, then decide to cover the pool and clean it up in the spring you could end up paying hundreds to thousands of dollars in clean up or worst case replacing your liner or resurfacing the pool.  So, again it all depends on when you close it, and in what condition it is when you do close the pool.

Green-to-Clean After - ASP of Huntsville
Green-to-Clean Before - ASP of Huntsville
If your pool is still closed you need to open it soon, because if you wait too long into the spring (April-May) you may uncover a green (spring algae bloom) swimming pool. We recommend keeping your pool open year-round unless you reside further north and are faced with hard, continual freezes throughout the winter months. If you must close your pool then wait as late into the fall as you can. Then, be sure to open your pool as soon as the weather begins to consistently warm up, typically this would be around the end of March for most of the southeast United States.  Contact your local ASP location to get your pool opening scheduled or to answer any of your swimming pool questions.

ASP - America's Swimming Pool Company - Welcomes Dave Bradshaw!

Dave Bradshaw was born and raised in the Mesa, Arizona area.  He is married and has 5 children. He has a bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Phoenix.   Dave has worked in the for-profit education sector for the last 13 years but had always wanted to own his own company.  He opened ASP of Gilbert in February and now this goal has become a reality.

How did you learn about ASP?
I have always been researching and looking into starting a business and having that desire to be my own boss.  I started talking to people who were doing different things and researching what opportunities were out there for business.  Clint Rowley, Owner/ Operator of ASP of Mesa, and I are Boy Scout Leaders together and one night he came to a meeting in his ASP shirt.   I started questioning him about the company and why he chose to start this franchise. It really started to make sense when you think about all the pools in Arizona and the demand for good quality service   I am familiar with the swimming pool companies that were already here, having grown up in this area.  I want to provide something different to Gilbert, AZ pool owners.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system? Why did you choose an opportunity with ASP-America’s Swimming Pool Company?
I was looking for a quick start-up because, being the father of 5 children, I did not have 3-5 years to spare to become successful.  I started to see all the resources and support available to assist me with starting my own ASP.  The support that is provided on the back-end allows me to go out on the front-lines and really attack and grow my business.  The resources also provide me the confidence that whatever I need is just a phone call away, which is a very good feeling when I am trying to best serve my customers.  The fact that Clint Rowley, who already owns a successful property management franchise company, decided to join ASP-America’s Swimming Pool Company franchise system speaks volumes to me.  Another key factor is the start-up cost for ASP-America’s Swimming Pool Company.  It is lower than most other franchise systems that I researched.

What makes your business different from other similar companies in the swimming pool industry?
Arizona is a very fragmented market in the swimming pool industry and there are many competitors servicing the area.  What makes ASP of Gilbert, AZ. stand above the competition is the principle that ASP was founded on, providing exceptional customer service no matter the circumstances.  When a customer does business with ASP-America’s Swimming Pool Company, they will have the confidence that my company has everything in place based on the way I operate my business.  They will know their swimming pool is being properly maintained and we will take care of all of their swimming pool needs.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The biggest challenge has been waiting to get started.  Once everything was in place, getting started has been exciting and fun.

Do you see any parallels between your previous work and now?
My previous line of work in the for-profit education system was customer driven and understanding the importance of each customer.  I want to build relationships with my customers and also with my community.

What are your expansion or development plans?
Gilbert, Arizona is a highly populated swimming pool community.   I am providing multiple swimming pool services among the homeowners and businesses.  I want to grow smart by having a strong foundation in place and then expand my service area.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions? And/or name one thing about yourself that most people don’t know?
My family loves to go hiking and spending time together outside having bonfires and roasting marshmallows.  There are gorgeous places we like to visit around the Mesa and Gilbert area.  I also enjoy staying in shape and trying to live a healthy lifestyle.  I am very excited about the opportunity of not having a desk job, after spending 13 years working in an office.  The fresh air will be a nice change.  Of course, I will definitely be wearing my sunscreen every day.

North Carolina Gains another ASP location to serve customers in the Charlotte, NC area!

Colon and Pam Fulk are originally from North Carolina.  After spending many years in the rail industry and relocating their family several times they returned to North Carolina where Colon started a railroad consulting business.  Chad and Paige Fulk own and operate Rescom Cabinets in Macon, GA.  They have two boys and are co-owners with Chad’s parents of ASP of Iredell County and ASP of Charlotte.

How did you learn about ASP?
Be on the lookout for one of our service vehicles!
Chad Fulk learned about ASP through his friendship with Tom Swift, President and COO of America’s Swimming Pool Company.  Chad and his father had been discussing branching out and buying or starting another company.  They researched the opportunity of buying into the ASP franchise system with Tom Swift and Stewart Vernon, Founder and CEO.
My father and I believed there was a great opportunity and need to start a swimming pool business in the Iredell County area of North Carolina.  We opened ASP of Iredell in April 2011.  We knew that eventually we wanted to expand into the Charlotte area.  We got word through our supply distributor that Fabulous Fountains and Pools of Charlotte was interested in selling their company and that is what started the process of purchasing an existing company and converting it to America’s Swimming Pool Company in Charlotte, NC.

What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system? Why did you choose an opportunity with ASP-America’s Swimming Pool Company?
ASP Franchising, Inc. provides a proven business plan that has been consistently successful with all of their existing franchises.  They have had not one franchise fail since their inception in 2005. They have people in place to help guide you, lead you and point you in the right direction of where you should be going and how things should be done.  This is a tremendous tool to have which allows us to provide a quality service and products to our customers.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The biggest challenge is that ASP of Charlotte is a conversion from an existing company so we want to get the new name and new services out to everyone in the community.
America’s Swimming Pool Company is implementing a new software program that will assist in streamlining the operation and allow for ASP of Charlotte to go paperless.  This challenge has allowed for there to be more organization and structure within ASP of Charlotte and we are already getting very positive feedback from the customers.  They know when we are coming to service their swimming pools and they are informed via emails when we have left their homes and what services were completed.

Do you see any parallels between your previous work and now?
Colon, Pam, Chad and Paige are successful business owners.  ASP utilizes the same programs for billing and bookkeeping which has allowed for a smooth transition with the addition of ASP of Charlotte.  We have been able to implement strategies that we have learned through ASP with our other company as well.

What are your expansion or development plans?
ASP of Charlotte plans to expand on the services they provide to their current customers and those in the Charlotte area.  We will continue with swimming pool maintenance and cleaning programs, but are also able to complete any needed swimming pool equipment repairs.  We also offer full swimming pool renovations from new vinyl liners, re-plastering and renovating the swimming pool concrete deck, coping and tile.  Our plan for future expansion is to open a new and improved retail store in a more customer populated area of Charlotte.  We hope the store will be able to build on the new services we are now providing in Charlotte.
